作为德闳小学部可持续发展负责人的Mr. Sam Phillips,在颁奖典礼中受邀接受了采访,介绍了自己与可持续发展事业的渊源,以及为何在德闳倡导该理念。

Q:您不仅是德闳小学部的可持续发展负责人,同样也是四年级的英文媒介探究老师,那么您如何平衡这两种工作呢?

A:其实,两者并不存在相互平衡的问题。德闳每个学部都有一位可持续发展负责人,从幼儿园、小学到中学,当然,此外还有许许多多的老师在热衷于促进可持续发展教育的工作,整个学校教职员工通力合作,将可持续发展理念与教学相结合。同时,我们还在姐妹教育集团的支持下,和姐妹校德威携手贯彻这一积极的生活态度,组织活动、共享资源。

我们给予学生大量机会,让他们通过自己的行动去影响身边的世界。可持续发展最大的魅力就在于,孩子们天生充满好奇心,他们关心环境,喜欢在自然中活动,在这种天然热情的趋势下,学习技能自然而然地发展着。在可持续发展主题的探究活动中,涵盖着大量学科知识,语文、英语、数学、科学、艺术等等,比如,当学生计算食物浪费的重量和比例时,会涉及到数学学科的内容,而这一切知识之间都是跨学科紧密联系的。

Q:看到您的介绍,今年是成为教师的第八年,在39岁才做出这个大胆的选择,原因是什么呢?

A:在成为教师以前,我作为生态学家,在赞比亚管理国家公园,担任诸如勘测生态保护地的职责,实地保护生态环境的工作使我深爱并珍惜我们的地球。但是我想做更多,于是选择投身教育行业,更广更深地去影响下一代年轻人,让他们也采取行动守护我们的生存环境,从小根植关注环境的意识,这样无论未来他们在什么行业什么身份,都乐于贯彻可持续发展的决策。

现在四年级的孩子也许还小,还处在懵懂期,并不是完全理解可持续发展的意义。但未来随着他们长大,与自然之间的联系会超越课堂的边界,他们会渐渐明白这些行动将对地球产生多大的影响。他们会更善于发现世界,乐于感受世界。比如,在我带学生户外学习的时候,我告诉他们不要大声喧哗吵闹,你的无心举动可能会惊吓到草丛里的小虫子,他们瞬间明白了我的话,变得安静,开始观察,这些体验是我成为老师后最大的收获和慰藉。

In the Chinese School Award of the Chinese British Chamber of Commerce last year, more than a hundred schools in the country applied for the contribution made in the field of sustainable development. In the end, our school stood out with the persistent efforts of sustainability, and deeply moved the judges from the performance of students to faculty employees and finally picked the crown.

As the person in charge of the sustainable development of the school, Mr. Sam Phillips also accepted an interview in the awards ceremony, telling the origin of his own and sustainable development career, and how to advocate this concept from the teachers and students of Dehong.

Q: You are not only the person in charge of the sustainable development of the Dehong Elementary School, but also the G4 EML teacher. So how do you balance these two tasks?

A: Actually, there is no balance between them. Each School of Dehong has a person in charge of sustainable development, from KG, ES to SS. Of course, many teachers are keen to promote the work of sustainability education, they combine sustainability concepts with the teaching of curriculum. At the same time, with the support of the Sisters Education Group, we work with the sisters School Dulwich to implement this healthy and positive attitude to organize activities and share resources.

We give students a lot of opportunities and let them influence the world around them through their own actions. The greatest charm of sustainable development is that children are born with curiosity. They care about the environment and like to discover and learn in nature. Under this natural enthusiasm, learning skills naturally develop. In the inquiry activities of the theme of sustainable development, it covers a lot of discipline knowledge, Chinese, English, mathematics, science, art, etc., for example, when students calculate the weight and proportion of food waste, they will involve the content of mathematics disciplines.

Q: Seeing your introduction, this year is the eighth year of becoming a teacher. At the age of 39, why you made this bold choice?

A: Before becoming a teacher, as an ecologist, I managed the national park in Zambia, and worked as a responsibility of surveying an ecological protection place. The work of protecting the ecological environment on the spot made me love and cherish our earth. But I want to do more, so I chose to devote myself to the education industry to influence the next generation of young people, so that they can take action to protect our living environment and focus on the environment development from childhood. In this way, no matter what industry they are in the future, he is happy to implement the decision-making of sustainable development.

Now the G4 students may not be mature enough, and they are not get the fully understanding of the significance of sustainable development. But in the future, as they grow up, the connection with nature will surpass the boundaries of the classroom, and they will gradually understand how much these actions will benefit on the earth. They will be better at discovering the world and happy to contribute to the world. For example, when I brought students outdoors, I told them not to make loud noise. Because their unintentional actions may scare the little bugs in the grass. They instantly understood, turned quiet, and started to observe. These experiences are my biggest gain and comfort after became a teacher.

We believed that this award brings a sense of honor and pride to Dehong will become the driving force for the sustainable development of our other aspects!
